Why does King’s College London use personally identifiable data for research?

As a university, we use personally identifiable data for world class research. When collected from research participants, we have to ensure it is in the public interest. This is because we are publicly funded.

Any data you provide will be processed in accordance with UK data protection law including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Who is responsible for looking after my personal data?

Under UK data protection law, a data controller is responsible for handling personally identifiable data. They decide how and why the data is processed.

At King’s College London, the data controller for research data is the university itself. For each research project, the Principal Investigator takes responsibility. They have to ensure that only the relevant research team has access to your personal data.

The information sheet you are given will specify who they are.

What is the legal basis for the processing of my data?

The University will process your personally identifiable data for the purpose of the research. This will be specified by the information sheet you are given as part of the informed consent process. The legal basis for processing your personally identifiable data for research purposes, under UK data protection law, is ‘public task’.

Researchers also have a common law duty and ethical obligation to gain explicit informed consent from you as a research participant for all aspects of the research. This includes the use of your personal data.

What are my legal rights as a research participant?

You have the right to be informed of the following:

  • What data we collect from you.
  • How we will ensure the confidentiality of your data.
  • How long we will keep your data for, and whether it will be shared with anyone else.

Under UK data protection law, you have the right of access to any information we hold about you. You can ask for it to be corrected, erased and object to how it is processed. However, this might be restricted in some circumstances. These include compliance with legal obligations.

Restrictions might also be applied for scientific research purposes, for example, this might be if the deletion of your data was seriously detrimental to the research. In such circumstances, we may need to keep the information about you that we have already collected.

However, the research team are required, under UK data protection law, to explain why these restrictions might be necessary before you agree to take part in the study. This is part of the informed consent process.

What If I am not happy with how my data is being handled?

If you wish to raise a complaint on how we have handled your personal data, you can contact our Data Protection Officer, Ms Olenka Cogias at info-compliance@kcl.ac.uk who will investigate the matter.

If you are not satisfied with our response or believe we are processing your personal data in a way that is not lawful you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)

INFORMATION SHEET FOR PARTICIPANTS WITH
EXPERIENCE OF LOW MOOD
Ethical Clearance Reference Number: HR/DP-23/24-4081
YOU WILL BE GIVEN A COPY OF THIS INFORMATION SHEET
Title of project
Aetiological factors in atypical depression: A mixed methods investigation
Invitation Paragraph
We would like to invite you to participate in this research project which explores the factors
that might contribute to the occurrence of depression. We are particularly interested in
which factors are linked to specific types of symptoms in people with depression, including
those known as ‘atypical’ symptoms. Before you decide whether you want to take part, it is
important for you to understand why the research is being done and what your
participation will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and
discuss it with others if you wish. Ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would
like more information.
What is the purpose of the project?
The purpose of the project is to explore the lived experiences of individuals who have
experienced different types of depression symptoms, such as changes in sleep or
appetite, low energy, and mood reactivity, amongst others. Research on this topic is
relatively scarce, and studies exploring the factors that contribute to different types of
depression are much needed.
Why have I been invited to take part?
You are being invited to participate in this project because you have expressed previous or
current experience of depression with either ‘atypical’ symptoms or with more common
(‘typical’) symptoms. ‘Atypical’ symptoms include mood reactivity (your mood improves
following positive events), increase in appetite, sensitivity to rejection, sleeping excessively
or feeling your arms and legs to be heavy. ‘Typical’ (melancholic) symptoms present as
persistent low mood that does not improve following positive events, or experiencing
decreased pleasure in activities you used to enjoy, as well as a decrease in appetite and
sleep quality, waking up much early than usual and finding your mood is much worse in
the morning. You have also confirmed that you are over 18 years of age and fluent in
English.
What will happen if I take part?
Your eligibility to participate in the study will first be checked by asking you to complete a
questionnaire online, which asks detailed questions about the symptoms of depression
that you have experienced. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, you will be asked to
complete a longer set of questionnaires online. Some of the questions will be of a sensitive
nature: you will be asked about potentially traumatic life events, including events that might
have occurred during your childhood and more recently. Other questions will inquire about

2
a variety of experiences, including social and environmental contexts, your personality,
physical and mental health symptoms (including the presence/absence of suicidal
thoughts/intent), and the ways in which you process your emotions and respond to
challenging situations. This should take around 60 minutes to complete.
If you have experienced atypical symptoms of depression, you may be invited to
participate in a 45 – 60minute online interview where you will be asked a series of
questions by the researcher. These questions will prompt you to discuss your experiences
of low mood, in addition to your thoughts and beliefs regarding what may have caused
these symptoms, and the factors that make the symptoms occur or get worse on an
ongoing basis. The discussion will be open-ended and the researcher may ask follow-up
questions in some cases. Illustrative examples of the questions you may be asked are:
‘When did you first notice feeling like something was affecting your mood negatively?’ and
‘Were there any particular life events or factors that occurred in the 6-12 months before the
symptoms started?’.
Participation will take place fully online. Questionnaires will be completed on the online
platform Qualtrics, in a private and secure space of your choosing. Interviews are to be
scheduled on MS Teams. As part of participation, the conversation will be recorded via
audio for the researcher to analyse. This will only be done with your informed, written
consent, and deleted immediately following data analysis. More information regarding this
can be found under the Data Handling section of this form, found below.
Do I have to take part?
Participation is completely voluntary. You should only take part if you want to and choosing
not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. Once you have read the information
sheet, please contact us if you have any questions that will help you make a decision
about taking part. If you decide to take part we will ask you to sign a consent form and you
will be given a copy of this consent form to keep.
Incentives
To compensate you for any loss of time or earnings linked to contributing to this research,
you will be reimbursed with a £10 shopping voucher for completing the questionnaires. If
you participate in the online interview, you will receive an additional £20 shopping voucher.
If you are found to be ineligible for the study when you complete the initial screening
questionnaire, you will have the option of being entered into a prize draw for a £50 shopping
voucher.
What are the possible risks of taking part?
This study involves answering questions regarding mental health difficulties, as well as any
difficult life events that you may have experienced. Some individuals could find these
topics challenging, uncomfortable, and potentially distressing. Please keep in mind that
you do not have to answer questions that you are uncomfortable with, and you will always
have the option to skip questions without giving a reason. You will be able to take breaks
during participation in the study, should you wish to. You will also have the right to
withdraw from the study at any time, without giving a reason.
v1.1 06/02/24
King’s College London – Research Ethics
Oct 2022
3
At the end of the study the researcher(s) will touch base with you to ensure that everything
has gone smoothly and that your well-being has not been unduly affected by participating.
Should any ongoing or urgent mental health risk be identified through-out your participation,
you will be supported in accessing mental health services. In this case, the researcher(s)
will follow up with you to ensure that your wellbeing is not at risk. If for any reason you may
feel the need to access further services, you will be guided in how to seek and utilise the list
of voluntary sector resources provided. If an urgent mental health need/risk is identified at
the screening stage, you would not be eligible to proceed with the study, and the research
team will support you in accessing support.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no immediate benefits for participation.
Data handling and confidentiality
Your data will be processed under the terms of UK data protection law (including the UK
General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018).

  • All study data will be pseudonymised, meaning that the data will be identified only
with a Participant Identification Number (PIN), not with any of your personal details.
  • Any identifiable data disclosed during the interviews (if applicable) will be redacted
and will not be included within the transcript, data analysis or final research report.
  • Within the final research output, participants will only be reffered to by a pseudonym
    or their PIN.
  • All study data will be kept within King’s College London secure OneDrive servers
and will not be downloaded or shared using any personal devices.
  • Your data will only be accessed within the immediate research team.
  • If you consent to being contacted regarding participation in other studies in the
future, your contact information will be stored in a secure database until 30/06/2026,
when it will be permanently deleted.
King’s College London has a responsibility to keep information collected about you safe
and secure, and to ensure the integrity of research data. Specialist teams within King’s
College London continually assess and ensure that data is held in the most appropriate
    and secure way.

your data will no longer be possible due to data being fully anonymised and committed to
final data analysis. If you choose to withdraw from the project before 30th June 2024, we will
not retain the information you have given thus far, unless you have explicitly consented to
us retaining your data in an anonymous format. After this date, withdrawal of your data from
the project will no longer be possible, but to safeguard your rights we will use the minimum
    personally identifiable informational possible.

I have been doing business with CURRYS from 2004 and well served except on the odd occasions I have to speak up for my RIGHTS. I was in store where I was advised about the purchase of a laptop in advance for my 65th birthday to expand my online business. I was told I would be contacted by the Tuesday about the order. Unfortunately for me I ended up spending all day in the A&E at St Thomas’s Hospital. My 101 year old husband is in Kings College Hospital. Therefore, this is a very STRESSFUL time for me. I was not aware if CURRYS had contacted me, so I went into the store to find out about the laptop.
To cut a long story short, I could not understand the attitude of the person who was dealing with me. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. We all have our personal experiences, and because this person had gone beyond and above to treat me fairly based on my disabilities, I was willing to understand.
But his attitude after he returned from finding the laptop was just too much for me after my ordeals of the past weeks after celebrating my husband’s 101 birthday. Getting assaulted the next day, still having the neighbours from HELL targeting me. The Housing Association and their Solicitors triggering me. I must confess, the HEALING started. Because I did not swear.
I hold CURRYS in high esteem, still because the person who served me did apologise for the delays in ordering the laptop. Therefore, I will always be vocal in helping those responsible in taking responsibility by not trying to GAG me.

Dear participant,

I hope this email finds you well. We are reaching out to you because you previously participated in the Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse in Major Depressive Disorder (RADAR-MDD) study and indicated your willingness to be contacted for future research.

The ‘Neuroads’ team based at King’s College London is currently recruiting participants with experience of depression for a new study exploring factors that might contribute to different types of symptoms that can occur during periods of low mood.

The team are seeking people who experience consistent low mood which does not improve in response to positive events, or a loss of interest or pleasure, when they feel depressed.

The study takes around one hour, involving some initial email correspondence with the team, and some online questionnaires.

Please see the attached participant information sheet and advertisement for further detail.

If you are interested in participating in this research or have any questions, please contact neuroadslab@kcl.ac.uk directly.

Dear Mrs Myers

Complaint: 202209405 – Housing For Women

I am getting in touch as you have contacted us recently about your complaint. Your case has been allocated to me today.

Firstly I am very sorry to read that you are unhappy with our Service. I have raised this with our Service Compaints team who will be in touch in due course. Their email is complaintsaboutus@housing-ombudsman.org.uk, if you would like to contact them directly.

In terms of your complaint with your landlord, you mention that you have received a stage 2 response which you are not satisfied with. If you would like to ask the Ombudsman to formally investigate your complaint, I would be happy to progress this for formal assessment.

So that I can take further action and determine the next steps, please provide a copy of your landlord’s final response. I will then contact you again to discuss this in more detail.

Please note that I am on annual leave until 15 April, so please do not be concerned if I do not respond to any emails immediately.

All the best for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Hello! There.

Hope you are well. I have visited and analyzed  your YouTube channel (Mervelee Myers )  and saw all of your videos. Already you have uploaded 10k   videos.

See, due to these problems your channel is not growing, videos are not getting proper views and subscribers are not increasing.

1/ Your video SEO Score is very low.

2/ Not have any video rank tags.

3/ not have any attractive Thumbnail

4/ Title – Description – tags are not SEO friendly.

And more.

If these issues are not solved your channel will not grow and the videos will not rank and not get proper views.

Thank you.

To Whom It May Concern

Should you be sending this to me or the solicitors? Based on the letter from Trina Philbert that caused me to end up in the hospital today. I will add this to the cyberbullying of Housing for Women and Devonshires Solicitors and the Housing Ombudsman Service. Please also take into account Deborah calling me on the 14th February 2024 after I came from court about keys. I recorded the conversation and asked her to send me an email, which she did.

Can you please refrain from trying to end my life after the death by slow torture am experiencing, ten years after the death of my mother with dementia. My husband is dying and your antics making me SICK.

Please send all correspondence to the solicitor. I am positive you can’t buy him out like Stephen Agera.

Regards

Mervelee Myers.

Our events start next month!
Dear Mervelee,
With just over one month to go until our first event, the countdown to events season is on!

Planning is well underway and we need your help again to ensure our events run smoothly on the day. We have over 400 events this year, including Race for Life, Shine Night Walk and Big Hike. Why not look at what’s happening near you?

Our events simply can’t run without our incredible volunteers!

No event day is the same and no matter which event or activity you choose, you can meet some fantastic people and have fun while beating cancer.

Thank you for your continued support.

Why Lucy’s volunteering again this year

For 14 years, Lucy has volunteered at Cancer Research UK events such as Pretty Muddy across South Wales.
“Aside from the cause, I have gained what can only be described as another family with staff and volunteers. The wonderful people I volunteer alongside make the early mornings and challenges of events easy to get through. There is a huge sense of fulfilment seeing the impact events have. There is nothing I love more than seeing participants’ faces as they cross the finish line knowing that they have achieved something great.”

Volunteers help bring our events to life, so we can help people live longer, better lives. Sign up and join us again this year.
