Hi Mervelee,

If you’ve ever wanted to write for a publication on Medium but didn’t know where to start, we have an event next week just for you. The Medium Pub Crawl, March 19, is all about connecting writers with publication editors.
Register here
What is Pub Crawl?
Join thousands of writers and editors for a day of learning about publications on Medium—who they are, what they’re looking for, and how to submit your stories. As a writer, you can explore a virtual expo hall of booths to learn more about publications on a wide range of topics, and attend panels with the people behind some of those publications. You’ll also hear from Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine on why Medium is a great place for writers.

Why you should register
Our goal is to connect publications editors and writers who write on Medium. Writers will walk away from Pub Crawl with more insight into their favorite publications and exposure to new ones.

Our platform is unique in offering a way for writers to reach an audience without building it first, and publications amplify that by creating audience, community, and feedback for writers interested in particular topics.

How to join Pub Crawl
First: Register for the event.

Then join us on Tuesday, March 19, kicking off at 11 a.m. ET with Tony’s keynote. The virtual expo hall will be open for 24 hours, so no matter your time zone, you can participate. Publication editors will be hosting virtual office hours throughout the day, so check the booths to find out when you can hop in and chat live with an editor.

We hope you’ll join us.

Turn2us March
Information Newsletter
Welcome to the March edition of the Information Newsletter from financial security charity Turn2us.

In this edition, we have outlined key information on the Spring Budget 2024 and the Universal Credit migration notices that many of you might have received, along with detailed steps you should take.

We have updates on new features added to our Benefits Calculator, an additional payment of disability premiums with Universal Credit, the deadline to claim Winter Fuel Payment, and how to report a missing Cost of Living Payment 2023/24.

Spring Budget

On the 6th of March, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt announced the Spring Budget 2024, which included changes to the tax rates, and some other changes that may impact benefits claimants.

Read our simple guide What does the 2024 Spring Budget mean for you? to find out key policies that may affect you

New features added to our Benefits Calculator

Our Benefits Calculator tells you about your benefits entitlement, the calculator now also tells how to access other financial assistance relevant to you, such as help with bills, health costs, help with raising a child, and more.

Universal Credit Migration Notice

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is sending out notice letters to people on legacy benefits including Tax Credits. People claiming these benefits are being moved to Universal Credit, which the DWP wants to replace the older benefits such as ESA, Tax Credits, and more.

It is important to note that you don’t need to claim Universal Credit if you’ve only received a leaflet from DWP telling you to get ready for Universal Credit. Wait until you receive a letter with a deadline.
If you’ve received a Universal Credit migration notice letter

If you have received a notice letter, make sure you read what is in the letter as it will have a deadline. Here are important things to know about deadlines:
Deadlines are three months after the date the notice letter was sent
Your legacy benefits will stop after this deadline
Make a successful claim for Universal Credit by the deadline, but the timing of that claim can be important so that you can prevent gaps between claims
We recommend you read our Universal Credit migration notice guide.

You can also use our website to search for an adviser from other charities and organisations, who can help you with more information or advice.

Report a missing Cost of Living Payment 2023/2024

From 14 February 2024 the amount of this element will increase if they also get other disability premiums prior to moving over to Universal Credit.

Claimants already getting the transitional severe disability premium element within their Universal Credit, could be eligible for backdated payments if they were also entitled other disability premiums prior to claiming Universal Credit.

Mervelee, why is writing a Will so important?

Dear Mervelee,
We know writing your Will may feel daunting, so we’ve pulled together some information on why it’s so important to have one and how to get started.

Two of our supporters, Sue and Patrick, have also kindly shared how they went about pledging a residuary gift (a share of their estate) to Cancer Research UK. Their pledge to fund cutting-edge research will help protect the future of their loved ones and bring hope to families everywhere.

People who pledge gifts in their Wills today are driving progress that can change the future.

Together we are beating cancer
The Cancer Research UK team
Learn more about pledging a gift in your Will
Three great reasons to write or update your Will

  1. Make sure your wishes are followed
With an up-to-date Will, you can have peace of mind that the people and causes that matter to you have been looked after the way you choose. It’s the only way to make sure your wishes are followed exactly as you intend.
  1. Make it easier for your family and friends
A Will makes it much easier for your family and friends to take care of your estate and be sure they’re acting on your wishes. Without a Will, the process can be difficult, stressful and time-consuming.
  1. Help to minimise inheritance tax
If you’ve got a Will, it can help reduce the amount of inheritance tax that needs to be paid on your estate.

Patrick and Sue have pledged to fund future breakthroughs

Patrick: “Cancer Research UK has a bold ambition of 3 in 4 surviving cancer by 2034. In 2034 my grandchildren will be 14, 16 and 18 years old and that’s a world I want them to grow up in.”
Married couple Sue and Patrick are tireless fundraisers and supporters of Cancer Research UK. After both losing their first spouses to cancer, they decided to dedicate their time to support the charity.

After a year of volunteering together, love blossomed and the couple married in December 2016.

Sue and Patrick have pledged a share of their estate to Cancer Research UK. Known as a ‘residuary gift’, it’s an easy way to leave a percentage of your Will to charity after providing for your loved ones.

Sue: “I’ve left a share of my estate to Cancer Research UK to help beat cancer for future generations. For me, research is where hope starts.”
Why pledge a gift to Cancer Research UK?

Our life-saving research simply isn’t possible without our generous supporters pledging gifts in their Wills.
These gifts fund one third of our work, which has helped double cancer survival in the UK in the last 50 years.

But nearly 1 in 2 of us will get cancer in our lifetime.* We want to bring about a world where people can live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer. By joining those who’ve pledged gifts in their Wills, you’ll help us find new ways to outsmart cancer and create a future that protects those you love.

Together we are beating cancer for people like Anita
Anita, a lead nurse in palliative care working in a hospice, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in March 2022.

“I am grateful that my cancer was considered curative; the thing which shocked me the most was that the surgeon said I would probably have the lump in my breast for 6 to 12 months.”

After her final cycle of chemotherapy in October 2022, she had 3 weeks of radiotherapy and will undergo hormone treatment for the next 5 years.

“I signed up for Race for Life with my friends and family as I wanted to give something back to Cancer Research UK by keeping up my efforts to fundraise. It was such a humbling feeling and a great atmosphere when we arrived and we had great fun walking and running around the course. I’d highly recommend anyone doing it as it’s such a great day out surrounded by like-minded people.”

Hi Mervelee,

Dementia affects every person differently, but it also affects members of the same family differently too.

As part of our biggest ever awareness campaign, ‘We live with dementia’, we’re shining a spotlight on children whose lives have been impacted by dementia through an exhibition of their artwork across the country.

Some of our artistic young supporters have shared their drawings to express their feelings about dementia, and how it has changed their relationships with family members living with the condition.

You can visit the outdoor live exhibition this week for free at Paternoster Square, City of London, London, EC4M 7DX. Or if you’re not in the area, see if you can spot the artwork across digital displays in Birmingham, Manchester and other parts of London.

Visit the exhibition >

One of the pictures on display is by Jack, aged nine, whose nanny was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia when she was 70. Jack used to enjoy baking and playing with his nanny. Nowadays he looks after her by helping her to tie her shoes as well as singing and drawing together.

In his own words, ”You looked after me, now I will look after you.”

If you stop by the exhibition, we would love you to share your photos or videos on social media so that even more people understand the impact dementia can have. Tag us at @dementiauk or, on Instagram, at @dementia_uk.

Best wishes,

Hannah Gardner
