Dear Ms Mervelee Myers, Housing for Women has asked us to carry out an independent survey to find out if you are happy with your home and the services they provide. MM Response: Let me put on record that Housing For Women targeted me after I did an online survey and was asked if I wanted Housing For Women to contact me about the answers. Thats when someone sneaked in and leave threatening letters on the mats outside my door. The behaviour of H4W left me concerned that I was at risk in my own home. What made matters worse is the fact H4W was abusing their Power of Authority using the key I had given them to trigger my PTSD. From then I no longer felt safe in my own home. But what happened since has alerted me to the plots concocted by H4W and Debbie Gilchrist and the Police.

I have always heard the sayings ‘everyone is unique’, or another popular one is ‘being unique is what makes you, you’. What does this really mean? I write this paper today in honor of Mervelee “Ratty” Nembhard. The title is “The mirror -Your Reflection” – when you look in the mirror, what do you see? It is your reflection, and you will have your own interpretation of your own “reflection”.
I met Mervelee a few years ago after having heard so much about her. As usual I had no expectations. My situation was complex, as I would have heard the many horror stories of the “in law” and saw the movie “Monster in Law”, and I was dating her son. The lady I met was the total opposite of the of the images portrayed and she was indeed a unique individual. She was beaming and very elated, anxious, and so welcoming. She was arriving in Jamaica to see her mom and attend her last son’s wedding. To enhance the package, she was meeting her four-year-old grandson for the first time. The days passed and it was a good trip from my perspective. I am urged to say through my lens because again I refer to the mirror ,my mirror. When I look at the photographs, what do I see? I see fun, and happy memories but then, that’s just me.
Mervelee is a very kind individual, with a very strong personality. She has her own unique ways of handling situations and is often misunderstood. This is because we live in a society that has established norms which dictates boundaries of accepted behaviours. Unfortunately, if you do not fall in these norms, you may be exposed to acts of discrimination. This is attributed to the fact that persons do not wish to accept the differences of individuals, but instead expect the behaviours displayed by everyone to be replicas of established protocols. It is imperative that I ask at this point- who dictates the way one should act and why? Who says your way of behaving is the right way? Is your way the only way? Well Ratty will be the first to tell you that her way may not be the accepted nor expected way, but that’s her way and that’s fine. It may or may not bring her the desired results, and sometimes may even come with consequences which may have to be handled through different mediums, but it is her mirror for her to see her reflection. There are always different approaches, and some may be more acceptable than others, but who are we to dictate if the action is right or wrong? Sometimes the best approach is to help the individual to look in the mirror and see the reflection from different perspectives.
Mervelee Nembhard is a storyteller. With her many stories and experiences, she is quite adept of sharing valuable information with whomever may share her interests. Her love for family, friends, children and her work with children with special educational needs, combined with her being identified as being “different” has made her an advocate for justice. This shows her character traits of being bold and brave as she “tackles the world” to defend her loved ones and the vulnerable. Sometimes I wish she would relax and enjoy life as it comes, but this again is my wish and not hers. Her life is viewed through her lens, and she needs to satisfy her personal desires to achieve personal satisfaction. Who dares to dictate, what an individual should or should not do? Instead let’s use the mirror to guide our approach- let’s look at life from different angles. Let’s see the pictures in different frames and try to understand the concept. Maybe then we can shift the focus from what’s being done wrong or right -to how can we do things differently, so everyone is happy? Everyone’s happiness will have different requirements and will also be achieved at different times, but through it all let us always be respectful of each other (privacy, feelings, individual preferences) and base our actions in the foundation of love.
Always use the mirror and see your reflection. The way you see you in the mirror may be different from the way others see you in the same mirror. This means we think and feel differently about the same thing. It may be presented in the same manner, at the same time, in the same place but we will use our personal lens which may give us different views. It’s ok to not understand the conclusions or actions of others but what’s not ok is to be disappointed in others because they did not share your perspective. I will applaud Ratty for the efforts she has made in identifying that she is responsible for her wellbeing, and the steps she has taken to improve herself. Her ability to identify her weaknesses is outstanding and she continues to work on herself, and is making great progress. She is not afraid to share her weaknesses and speak openly about her vulnerabilities, which when looked at through the lens of others may not be readily accepted nor supported. She continues to strive to achieve her goals despite many obstacles and through her lens -limited support.
Today I write for Mervelee Ratty Nembhard, because she continues to contribute to others for the greater good. I have personally benefitted from her kindness as when corporate entities would not support a dream, my little contribution to society through my PhD studies, “Ratty” was there to sponsor my first-year’s tuition which in her mirror was an investment in her grandkids. I use this medium to express my appreciation and to confirm my commitment to delivering on making a difference and helping others to look through their lens and see the world from different angles.
The mirror will always give you a reflection, what really do you see? Do you see you, or do you see me? Can you identify the differences between you and me? Always remember everyone is unique. Sometimes it’s easier not to try to understand the other person but rather to start accepting their differences and respecting their unique qualities. Being different does not mean I am wrong, and you are right, it simply means you are YOU and I am ME. Mervelee Nembhard you will always be “Ratty”, embrace you.

She was arriving in Jamaica to see her mom and attend her last son’s wedding. To enhance the package, she was meeting her four-year-old grandson for the first time. The days passed and it was a good trip from my perspective. I am urged to say through my lens because again I refer to the mirror ,my mirror. When I look at the photographs, what do I see? I see fun, and happy memories but then, that’s just me.
Mervelee is a very kind individual, with a very strong personality. She has her own unique ways of handling situations and is often misunderstood. This is because we live in a society that has established norms which dictates boundaries of accepted behaviours. Unfortunately, if you do not fall in these norms, you may be exposed to acts of discrimination. This is attributed to the fact that persons do not wish to accept the differences of individuals, but instead expect the behaviours displayed by everyone to be replicas of established protocols. It is imperative that I ask at this point- who dictates the way one should act and why? Who says your way of behaving is the right way? Is your way the only way? Well Ratty will be the first to tell you that her way may not be the accepted nor expected way, but that’s her way and that’s fine. It may or may not bring her the desired results, and sometimes may even come with consequences which may have to be handled through different mediums, but it is her mirror for her to see her reflection. There are always different approaches, and some may be more acceptable than others, but who are we to dictate if the action is right or wrong? Sometimes the best approach is to help the individual to look in the mirror and see the reflection from different perspectives.
Mervelee Nembhard is a storyteller. With her many stories and experiences, she is quite adept of sharing valuable information with whomever may share her interests. Her love for family, friends, children and her work with children with special educational needs, combined with her being identified as being “different” has made her an advocate for justice. This shows her character traits of being bold and brave as she “tackles the world” to defend her loved ones and the vulnerable. Sometimes I wish she would relax and enjoy life as it comes, but this again is my wish and not hers. Her life is viewed through her lens, and she needs to satisfy her personal desires to achieve personal satisfaction. Who dares to dictate, what an individual should or should not do? Instead let’s use the mirror to guide our approach- let’s look at life from different angles. Let’s see the pictures in different frames and try to understand the concept. Maybe then we can shift the focus from what’s being done wrong or right -to how can we do things differently, so everyone is happy? Everyone’s happiness will have different requirements and will also be achieved at different times, but through it all let us always be respectful of each other (privacy, feelings, individual preferences) and base our actions in the foundation of love.
Always use the mirror and see your reflection. The way you see you in the mirror may be different from the way others see you in the same mirror. This means we think and feel differently about the same thing. It may be presented in the same manner, at the same time, in the same place but we will use our personal lens which may give us different views. It’s ok to not understand the conclusions or actions of others but what’s not ok is to be disappointed in others because they did not share your perspective. I will applaud Ratty for the efforts she has made in identifying that she is responsible for her wellbeing, and the steps she has taken to improve herself. Her ability to identify her weaknesses is outstanding and she continues to work on herself, and is making great progress. She is not afraid to share her weaknesses and speak openly about her vulnerabilities, which when looked at through the lens of others may not be readily accepted nor supported. She continues to strive to achieve her goals despite many obstacles and through her lens -limited support.
Today I write for Mervelee Ratty Nembhard, because she continues to contribute to others for the greater good. I have personally benefitted from her kindness as when corporate entities would not support a dream, my little contribution to society through my PhD studies, “Ratty” was there to sponsor my first-year’s tuition which in her mirror was an investment in her grandkids. I use this medium to express my appreciation and to confirm my commitment to delivering on making a difference and helping others to look through their lens and see the world from different angles.
The mirror will always give you a reflection, what really do you see? Do you see you, or do you see me? Can you identify the differences between you and me? Always remember everyone is unique. Sometimes it’s easier not to try to understand the other person but rather to start accepting their differences and respecting their unique qualities. Being different does not mean I am wrong, and you are right, it simply means you are YOU and I am ME. Mervelee Nembhard you will always be “Ratty”, embrace you.

Thank you so much for participating in the workshops to discuss whether Hate Crime categories should be expanded to include homelessness. I wanted to give you a quick update, and to let you know that Crisis have heard the audio recordings and the testimonies, and have decided to prepare a response to the Law Review consultation that:
Calls for the Hate Crime categories to be expanded to include homelessness
Highlights the further work that will be needed to make a difference, including building trust with the police, and building awareness and understanding of the issue and rights that people experiencing such crimes would have under the law.
The consultation response won’t be submitted until mid January, as Crisis are taking advice on how the legal case can be best made in their response to the Law Commission, and to develop recommendations on the work that would be needed for any change in the law to make a real difference.
Above all, there is a recognition that the kinds of abuse and experiences that were discussed in the workshops are unacceptable, and a change in the law would be a step to recognise this.
We will keep you updated on how this progresses. Thank you so much for being involved in these sessions which covered such difficult experiences – it’s great that your views have clearly informed the position that Crisis will take on this issue.

Let me get to the nitty gritty of why I am pissed off with the Employment Tribunals Laws and Legislations and all manner of evil that they used to keep strong minded people who don’t put up with crap in their place. When Mr AETomlinson came to this UK in 1956, he was his own boss in Jamaica. He owned property and doing his own business. But once he came here and have ambitions to make supn of himself that was another story. He got knocked down several times but he rise to the challenges each time. Until once when he reached rock bottom and applied for a Mortgage, he was greeted with “Mr Tomlinson, you have a small illusion that one day you can become a Property Tycoon”? Surfice it to say, he went and got the loan for the mortgage at the highest rates. That’s why when people come to me with their stupid advice, I honestly don’t want to know. From my ex-husband Mr Myers pulled the rug from under my feet and I was homeless, I was in the Refuge until I got this place. I am not moving into anybody’s place again for niether love nor money. When I get back to Jamaica God’s willing, I am going back to my Comfort Zone, my Yard a GaGa Street. That’s why I will be forever telling stories about the evil that is LEYF Nurseries. My 2 #husbands past and present. I never deal with Toy Boys, give me my Sugar Daddy any day. But the honest truths was I was always searching for my Father who I lost to Parkinson’s. I have finally come to terms with losing my Papa, but not yet my Mama.
Now I have to tell the story about why today has had such a profound effects on me. When Mr T and I got together, he wanted to do so much for me. Starting my own business, encouraging me to learn to drive to buy me a car, etc, etc… But I could do none of those things because of my DNA and the childhood traumas that affected my transitional developments from the time my Father was struck down with Parkinson’s Disease. So yes there are lots of things I will never be able to do that others take as the norms. Throughout my ordeals at BIB, HOC and New Cross LEYF Nurseries, the incident that affected me the most was what #MarionBreslin done to me one day. When I was at Luton Street I have a Contingency Plan, part of the Reasonable adjustments to help me carry out normal day to day activities. That means I asked for flexible working to help me to be able to work full time and being my husband’s carer. All this was removed with my transfer. During the height of the time when my childhood traumas was triggered into PTSD, Tom was having hypos every day. This morning in particylar, I was on the early shift and I just manged to get Tom out of the hypo and give him his breakfast. I rushed out to get to work on time, because already the noose was tightening around my neck. I could not even get time out to attend NHS Appointments. I asked the stupid idiot if I could be allowed to call my husband to check and find out if he was ok. She pretended as if she didn’t hear me. Knowing that she might miscontrued the check to mean going home, I rephrase the narratives. Believe me that gal didn’t allow me to call my husband until I went on my break. So I was working and worrying what if…? In response to this, I’ll have to acknowledge my changes of Fortune since the biggest bust up with my #Husband. Creating Legacies With Memories
As I am thinking about what to include in my tribute, I am stuck by how much Social Media has changed since the time I joined Facebook in 2009. I remember signing up with my AOL account before changing to #BritishTelecom. That’s why I am vigilant that the #cyberbullies do not deny me my rights to be heard. I have been creating legacies for everyone who played and is playing important roles in my life. Whether to help me develop the #resilience to survive the storms or like Ms Turb, not to accept injustices without challenging the perpetrators.
I guess my first memory of Ms Turb, must go back to moving from near the Townhead Cross Road where I was born to GaGa Street in late 1963. And #proving my clumsiness didn’t happen overnight, my #memory is of how I got the #scar in my forehead that will last me to my grave come about. In my excitement discovering the new environment, I ran from where we lived, only to fall flat on my face and hit my head on a rock stone #protruding out of the ground at the entrance to the Street. Hopefully, this will give the younger generation an indication of the lifestyle we had growing up. I did not stay down, I got back up and despite not remembering much else. I have the scar in my forehead as reminder.
The Influencers
As a girl growing up in Jamaica, I guess there are/were people who are/were destined to play important roles in my life. Ms Turb was one of those persons who help to #influence me to be the #woman I am today. My reflections will be tinged with fond memories of a woman I #admire, for the reason we share much in common. We are women, who are #misunderstood for the fact we are #outspoken. And not prepared to conform to whatever norms others expect us to.
As far as my memories go back, Ms Turb’s home was open to me and anyone who needs a place to rest for a while and have a chat. I remember going there when it’s dinner time and everyone, scrambling for the utensils. The joke is/was if you are not quick enough, you must eat with your hands. Because the utensils put away for special occasions would not be used.
There were star apple and guinep trees in the yard at the front. Of course, during season, Ms Turb sold the items. But truth be told, more was given away than sold. Ms Turb’s #jokes should have been #copyright and #patent back then, so she can get #royalties even in death. Back in the days when Mass Diamond travelled to Farm Working, Ms Turb told some risqué jokes about how she maintained #fidelity in her #marriage. Anyone wanting to know more will have to sign up to GDPR training and the Royalties will go towards a Project in Honour of Ms Turb’s Legacies about Teaching Young People to Protect themselves from Discrimination.
Not Just An Ordinary Woman
Ms Turb was no ordinay woman, she was on the side of the underdog. I carried water from their yard as they were #privilege to have some of the comforts that I aspire to at the time. On becoming a woman my son Kevin Murray and Ms Turb’s granddaughter were born the same date. These of some of what we remember, especially if you are a writer like me. Before I forget, everyone is/was Ms Turb’s #cousin. You don’t necessarily have to know how it came about, but she could explain.
I recalled, she told me her mother came from the same District as Ms Connie. Amly D Nembhard and I used to joke Ms Turb cousin stop at Mama Lou and don’t reach us. But you can’t get away from Ms Turb Wicked Sense of Humour and Dry Wit.
Another thing is no one keep vex with Ms Turb for long, she would not allow it. She was that jovial kind of person, who speaks her mind, curse if she must and forget about it.
Wherever you live, it takes the village to raise the child. I recalled hearing that my sons Valdin Legister were hopping the cane carts to go swim at River. I warned them and when they did not take heed, I take matters in my own hands. I waited out by the Johnson’s for them and if you know Ms Turb any at all, you know this was just up her Street. When they arrive, I called them over, take my shoes and clobber VAL and he run off. That boy was always running away from everything from the time I used to take him to Dr Campbell, and he mentioned #Injection. But Kevin stands up, take his licks and walks away.
Getting Endorsed Is Not A Mean Feat
After they went, Ms Turb said “Ratty I think Kevin was going to hit you back?” But you are a good mother and your boys #respect you. I am proud of you and them mi daughter. For some reasons she calls you different name to suit the occasion. To have Ms Turb #endorsing my parenting skills is no mean feat. Sometimes I would go run jokes with her and Mass Diamond that I was going to marry Pam-Pam. I will leave you guessing about the jokes to spare your blushes.
Getting the opportunity via my sister Joy Mertie Bernard to come to travel to the UK, I didn’t have money to spare for a new suitcase. But Mass Diamond came to my rescue, when I told him my situation and sawder the clip back to the case. I was like a Brand-New Second-Hand Gal, and he didn’t #charge me a penny. If we are lucky, we will live to a ripe old age like Ms Turb. I admire the fact she was this #cheerful woman whom I knew from I was a little girl, until I became a mother and grandma.
Whenever I visit, she was playing dominoes with Mass Windsor and others and getting up to all kinds of #mischiefs. As the years went by and some of her friends departed, she never lost that kindred spirit of loving to be in the company of others. I would spend time with her, #comb her hair and letting her be the person I always knew she is/was. I was joining in with her jokes and sharing life in the community that’s home as I know it.
I recalled her daughter Toogoods asking me how her mum let me comb her hair and won’t let her? But the #trick is to ponder to the wishes of any older person who you are dealing with. Remember it’s not about our needs, but theirs. So, whenever I am with her, I #comply with her commands. There is no two ways about it.
One’s Upbringing Is Key To Our Values & Beliefs
The last time we spent any time together was after mum’s funeral. She came to visit when I was with VAL, who offered her some drinks from what was left over. Ms Turb showed us her #knife in her bag which she said was for her own protection. She told us her life story but hearing her version of the “Cornmeal & Rum Saga” was a revelation of who Ms Turb is/was as a person. That’s when it dawned on me not to underestimate a clever, determined woman. Because I have some of her traits in me and on reflections there’s no doubt that we are related.
On a more serious note, after sharing stories about her life, she went into other aspects of her upbringing. This time I had to ask her #permission to repeat the scripture so I could record it, I was that impressed by her. I have no memory whatsoever. The recording is on Social Media if anyone is interested as her LEGACY. As we celebrate, I want her Legacies to help us not to pigeonhole and judge others. Because in the time spent with Ms Turb in the presence of my son. I learned so much about this woman who is/was a legend and a treasure.
I am positive we take the people we know for granted, until there is a reason to view them in a different light and other circumstances that might cause us to examine our conscious and unconscious biases. Realising that Ms Turb was much deeper in her #spirituality than I thought. I could identify her weaknesses, but her strengths were more revealing of who she is/was. Our strengths and even our weaknesses help to make us unique. Listening to her talking about periods in her life, what struck me the most, was her need to go to Church to fellowship with others. For me her scripture passage is my testimony that she had a Christian Upbringing that she reverted to during time when she needs comforting and solace from a Supreme Deity. I want the last time we spent together to be my lasting memory of her.
Learning Lessons From The Stalwarts Who Are Legends
Ms Turb was a woman of #courage who stand firm for her beliefs. She was the loving person who tried giving of herself to make others happy. She didn’t think twice about sharing jokes at her own expense to make us laugh. Not much bothered her, either. She did not pretend to be someone she was not. Ms Turb went on before us, but her LEGACIES remain.
We salute Ms Turb, the LEGEND who lived life to the full.

Realising how much I am like the strong women from the generation who are now dying out, I am conscious of the fact that we are not aware of our history. Therefore, we are not able to create the legacies for the future generation. I was lucky my father was a Storyteller. But part of my history was lacking because my mother wasn’t much of a talker. I am thankful to my brother Balis and Ms Connie for filling the void and sharing mum’s stories, months before she died. Please start capturing the history of your family, otherwise there will be questions left unanswered.
