Amid outrage, the leadership of Charlemont High School in Linstead, St Catherine, is denying claims that students were sent home today because they wore ripped jeans to the institution during the hosting of what is known as Jersey Day.
As part of the event, students were allowed to wear either their uniform or certain casual outfits such as jeans.
Valdin Legister, vice principal, told The Beacon that the school had made it clear that ripped jeans would not be allowed. It makes no difference whether or not the rip reveals the students’ skin, he added.
“Strict instruction was given that they should not wear ripped jeans; this was communicated in writing and it was announced over the PA system,” Legister asserted. “We are trying to maintain a standard at Charlemont and so we can’t just accept anything. We are trying to lift the standard… It’s a choice. If students decide to go with the Jersey Day activity, they go in the proper gear. If they don’t have the proper gear, they wear their uniform.”
Legister added that he is not aware of any student being sent home due to the wearing of ripped jeans. “I can’t confirm that; I have no knowledge of that… A matter of fact, the students who even had on ripped jeans, after a while, I recorded their names and they were allowed into the school.”
Legister declined to state how many students wore ripped jeans, but he made it clear that parents are welcomed to bring their grouses to the attention of the school.
“I welcome parents to bring any issue they have; all they have to do is communicate with us,” Legister said.
A guardian set off a firestorm in an open claim that the school turned back her cousin because he wore a ripped jeans. She posted a photo showing the child in the ripped jeans, noting that the skin was not exposed.
“Him pay him fare reach Charlemont School an dem turn him back… Mi hurt, Charlemont. Oonu fi duh better than that,” the guardian told a group of parents and teachers. “Mi know rules and everything, and me as a parent always goh by rule,” she noted.
Other parents also expressed outrage.
One of them said she did not see an issue with students wearing ripped jeans to the event if the rips are not revealing. She added that, if any bad had befallen the child allegedly sent home, the institution would be held responsible. In addition, the parent lamented that students who wore ripped jeans were left outside the school gate, exposed to the scorching sun for a protracted period of time.
The guardian, who claimed that her cousin was sent home, also said she was informed that some students who wore uniform were turned back from the school’s Jersey Day. When asked if that is so, the vice principal replied: “That’s not true.”

I was under the weather lying in bed on Tuesday when I had the chance to watch Horizon – Living with Autism by Professor Uta Frit. This programme was a real eye opener for me as it transported me back to the time I had my first encounter with getting an insight into autism. This was an article in the Nursery World which I kept to date. I have since gone on to do studies to enhance knowledge and expertise. I realised that because of lack of knowledge children with diverse and complex needs are not getting support via early intervention strategies. Growing up and struggling throughout life with what I call my Hidden Disability that is one of the primary reasons I am so passionate about inclusion. However I have come to realised that my K/V/B have become like an Albatross around my Blinking Neck & more of a Hindrance to my well-being. Guess I will just have to Grin & Bear then?

I know more about Parkinson’s disease than most because I’d seen my dad struggled & destroyed by Mr Parkinson’s disease for more than a decade, He was late 40’s when he was struck down. Then my uncle also had Mr P & was unlucky not to have the same sort of support network like dad in the form of Mama. But I inherited the condition & knew from my early 20’s (so no I self-diagnosed) I am mid 50’s & coping with lifestyle changes & holistic approaches. Wow! I must do my research about this speaker. Because I spent the past 8 years trying to get closure from the Judiciary of England and Wales and Criminal Justice System and Crown Prosecution Services that presided over 2 miscarriages of justice despite I made my life an “Open Book” sharing my stories about my Traumas and the Early Intervention Strategies I used from I was taught to develop resilience by my Primary School Teacher.

I was pushed over the edge when I did not become HCT Group Impact Report 2016 statistics of 1 in 5 of all suicides are associated with unemployment. My 99 year old husband and I are TRAUMATISED and become the second statistics of 600,000 older people in the UK say they leave their home once per week or less. After careful consideration, I have decided that in asking me to provide Bank Statements from 2019 for my Natwest Account is in breach of my Human Rights and the Protected Characteristics of the Equality Act 2010. The GDPR 2018 must be considered when I state that I will be providing Bank Statements (what I have left) from Barclays Bank. There is a Charter of Rights and I think the Systemic Discrimination continues because I was given the money from the DWP that was owing to me. I did not even know about it until Joan from the DWP contacted me about getting help for me and my husband.
I will send the update from when my Pension was paid into my Natwest account. I will be scrutinizing every information or data sent to me. Because I think this is just another attack on my husband and me who are TRAUMATISE by DISCRIMINATION after the death of my husband.
