On Monday I accompanied my 98-year-old husband to his appointment at Kings College Hospital https://careers.kch.nhs.uk and as anyone who grew up in the West Indies will understand we decided to kill https://www.jobs.nhs.uk as many birds as possible with one stone. We took a cab to the hospital because I don’t drive. From the hospital, we got the bus, for 2 stops as Tom said he was going to the barber. Since the last time I went with him, the barber is at a different location. Owing to mobility, and other underlying conditions, my husband is no longer the “Superman” his son called him. But he is determined to keep his independence and for the proud man he is, this important to him, that I must ensure his wishes are granted www.southwarkcarers.org.uk. This is the reason I want to give credit to the barber who attended to my husband on Monday. I give this young man credit for the way he conducted himself from the time we entered the shop until we departed. He is sensitive and caring, helping Tom to remove his jacket and talking to him to let him know he is aware of his needs. I am weary of my engagement and interactions with others because their response can be triggers and my reactions are sometimes misconstrued.

I will leave saying that society owes it to the older generations to foster this kind of relationship I witnessed with my husband and his barber. Thanks to my husband’s barber I live in hope that these young men and the Best Choice Barbers will get the support to continue serving the public and be sensitive to the needs of the elderly population they serve.

Their service is appreciated on behalf of the Windrush Generation in fostering the British Values that I was raised with in Jamaica.
