The great Jamaica Labour Party was founded 78 years ago today, on July 8 1943 by Jamaica’s first Prime Minister and father of the nation, the Rt. Excellent Sir William Alexander Clarke Bustamante.
The Party was formed in 1943 to take the struggle of the workers, until then confined to collective bargaining and the advocacy of social legislation, to the field of politics where the power of the state could be won for the workers and become an instrument for the improvement of their standard of living, and the reduction of social and economic inequality.
